His story – Martial Arts has always been Tahir’s passion from a very young age. Here is his fascinating story:
Like many children, Tahir was also bullied throughout his early years from the age of 4. At the age of 11, he finally got the opportunity to start his Martial Arts journey and very quickly, the bullying stopped.
Like most people growing up in the 80’s and 90’s, he started training in Karate and soon became known as the ‘Karate Kid’ within his school, as well as competing in and winning several Karate tournaments. His new found fame and confidence naturally made him very popular.
However, he never forgot what it felt like being bullied himself and simply could not tolerate seeing anyone else in that same situation. This led to him often standing up for other kids, even if it meant going up against other popular kids. His popularity, confidence and strength became a positive influence in helping others.
A realistic wakeup call – Tahir had already achieved his Brown Belt in Karate with only a year left before getting his Black Belt. Unfortunately, at the age of 19, he was attacked on the street by a 6 foot soldier in Aldershot (home of the British Army). There was a brief brawl, and thankfully no real harm was done. But this proved to be a rude awakening for Tahir, who quickly came to the realisation that Karate isn’t effective for real life scenarios, and that his confidence was in fact based on fantasy rather than reality.
He was now in a dilemma. Should he feed his ego and continue his Karate training for another year so that he can finally call himself a ‘Black Belt’ or should he quit Karate altogether and look for something more street effective? At the end of the day, is it your belt or your actual skills that will truly save you?
Understanding that the real purpose of learning a martial art is not for a belt or some ego trip but rather to learn how to effectively defend oneself and one’s loved ones, Tahir left Karate and over the next 11 years, trained in Muay Thai and Western Boxing under the British Champion at the time. Despite finding these systems to be more effective, Tahir still found himself not satisfied when asking the same question “is this really designed for real life?”.
Reality Based training – Looking into and trying various other styles, Tahir’s search eventually led him to Defence Lab which he found to be the most realistic when it came to real life scenarios. He eventually achieved his Black Grade and continued to train with the Founder and the top team for many years. However, he began to find certain flaws within this system too which he was then able to address in his own system – Unleash Self Defence, greatly improving both the journey and the experience of the student.
Parent of 3 children – Being a parent of 3 children has given Tahir valuable experience, as well as, understanding first-hand what other parents will go through in raising their children in today’s world and the challenges that they are to face. This in turn allows Tahir to also offer real and practical solutions .
All 3 of his children have been training with him from an early age and have been taught how to effectively deal with bullies, ensuring that they would never have to suffer like Tahir did as a child. Of course, the bullies certainly tried with his children, but they were quickly put in their place, thereby proving the tactics taught by Tahir were efficient and effective. And it is these very same tactics that are now taught to all students at Unleash Self Defence.
Tahir’s ethos – It’s a fusion of the old ways mixing with the new ways. Refusing to be held back by out-dated techniques and always quick to adopt the best practices of the time, yet Tahir still strongly believes in the traditional values of honesty, loyalty, integrity, discipline and strength of character….. attributes which he aims to pass onto each student at Unleash Self Defence.
Tahir’s personality – Tahir is very out-going and friendly, and always makes his students feel very welcomed and part of the ‘Unleash Family’. He believes that the training should always be fun and enjoyable whilst at the same time maintaining the seriousness of what is being taught. The key to Tahir’s success is that his training is always insightful and inspirational, never failing to leave his students feeling moved and empowered. Tahir now wishes to replicate this same type of teaching style amongst all Instructors within Unleash Self Defence.
Tahir Ahmad – Founder

Tehseen Ahmad – Co-Founder
- FAA Level 3 Award in Activity First Aid and Level 3 Award in Combat Training First Aid.
- BA Business Management.
His story – Being the eldest son of the Founder, Tehseen’s journey within self defence and martial arts has also been quite extra-ordinary. His training started with his father from a very early age, learning Western Boxing, Thai-boxing and Grappling. He then continued to be taught by Tahir in Defence Lab from the age of 13.
Accomplishments – Due to his exceptional skills and at the age of only 15 years, Tehseen became the youngest ever Instructor in the history of Defence Lab. He then went on to break another record by becoming the youngest ever member of Team Storm at only 17. He has achieved his Black Grade in Defence Lab.
And now having completed his Business Degree (just like his father), he will be working full-time as Co-Founder of Unleash Self Defence.
Proving the training works – On a few occasions growing up, Tehseen has had to use his Self Defence skills to get out of bad situations. Some incidents happened during school, successfully fighting against bullies.
At the age of 15, it was against a man who decided to attack him when he was by himself on the street. Tehseen dropped him instantly and then got out of there which was textbook.
Another time being when Tehseen was 17. Three older boys surrounded him as he was walking back home, most likely looking to mug him. Tehseen managed to floor all three of them without a scratch. Click here to read more about this incident. Link takes them to Blog.
All of these incidents not only prove the reality of certain dangers, both in and out of school, but also prove that the training Tehseen had received, really did save his life on more than one occasion. By the grace of God, Tehseen was not only saved from physical harm but also from mental and psychological harm. We have seen too many times the psychological damage that someone receives from being physically attacked and hurt. Tehseen’s training not only saved him from this but in fact helped him to grow more in confidence with each incident. This is the real difference that his training has made for him and it is truly priceless!
His style – Having shadowed his father from the very beginning, Tehseen has naturally picked up Tahir’s teaching style but has also blended it with own unique flavour. Being incredibly outgoing and friendly, both kids and adults find it very easy to relate with him. And from a young age, he has been very much respected by all age groups.

Farhaj Malik – Instructor
- FAA Level 3 Award in Activity First Aid and Level 3 Award in Combat Training First Aid.
His story – Growing up in Frankfurt, Germany, Farhaj got to see and experience first-hand how hard and tough life can be. It was therefore only natural for him to be more attracted to martial arts than any other sport or activity.
His martial arts journey first began with Judo at the early age of 7, followed by Boxing and various other traditional and modern styles. His ultimate aim was to try and cover as many aspects of self defence as possible.
He eventually moved to the UK where he trained under Tahir as an Instructor for Defence Lab.
Accomplishments – He has achieved his Black Grade in Defence Lab.
His style – Farhaj is certainly a people’s person, having an incredible ability to get on with people of all ages and backgrounds. With his own style of teaching, he runs two venues for Unleash Self Defence, helping many on a weekly basis to achieve their personal goals.
Farhaj Malik – Lead Instructor

Eshan Ahmad – Instructor
- FAA Level 3 Award in Activity First Aid and Level 3 Award in Combat Training First Aid.
His story – Eshan is the second son of the Founder and his journey within self defence and martial arts also started at a very early age with his father, learning Western Boxing, Thai-boxing and Grappling. He then continued to be taught by Tahir in Defence Lab from the age of 10.
Accomplishments – Just like his older brother, at the age of only 15 years, Eshan also became one of the youngest ever Instructors in the history of Defence Lab due to his exceptional physical skills, as well as his teaching skills. And again, at only 17, Eshan was also inducted into Team Storm.
Eshan not only achieved his Black Grade in Defence Lab but was the first person ever to have done his Black Grade using only one hand (as he had injured his hand prior to the grading). Eshan therefore prepared for his Black Grading by adapting the techniques accordingly, like what one would have to do if they were forced to fight with one hand in real life also. His adaptation using elbow strikes instead of punching for the injured hand greatly impressed the examiners, demonstrating his high skill level.
Proving the training works – Eshan has also had his fair share of incidents in school, where he has had to resort to his self defence training in order to defend himself against attacks from other boys. Each time his training proved successful.
Upon finding out that Eshan does self defence training, he was even challenged to a sparring contest by a boy in Sixth Form, who was known to be the toughest in the school. It was a friendly contest in which Eshan came out as the victor.
Again, like in the case of his older brother, these incidents proved to only increase Eshan’s confidence instead of damaging him, the key factor being that he was able to deal with the situations effectively.
It’s important to share these detailed accounts for the benefit of others because bullying and being attacked on the street are real and genuine concerns. As a parent also, it is incredibly re-assuring to know that your child is able to handle themselves in such situations without being the instigator.
